In this issue: Our top SIX most important pieces of IT advice.
1) Change your passwords regularly, especially if you use a web-based service like LinkedIn or FaceBook. If your service is compromised (like LinkedIn was recently), change your password on ALL the email addresses associated with the account. Many hackers are not only after the password to the primary account/service they hacked, but also to other accounts that may share the same password.
2) Budget ahead for future hardware/software upgrades to avoid unexpected expenses.
3) Ensure that each computer in your network has business class AntiVirus software and is updated often. If you don’t have a server, there are several good hosted solutions available.
4) Install free web content filtering services, like OpenDNS.com, for your network to protect against malware and viruses. OpenDNS is a free service that prohibits access to websites known to spread malicious software and viruses. It also blocks users in your office from browsing to undesirable websites.
5) Know what is on your network and how anyone can connect to it. With the rise of consumer products in the business world, the chances for malware infiltration and data loss are increasing daily.
6) Power off your PC each night. This ensures updates are fully installed and saves electricity when the PC is not in use.
